What I learned in IT 101 that I cannot be tested on.

Seeing how a person could be tested on almost anything, this is a pretty tough question. Forced to come up with an answer, I would say the power of the web is something that I cannot be tested on.

When I say power, I mean many things. Firstly, there are many traditional products that get replaced by the web. This gives the web power because it has many capabilities, from video capture to music playing to writing documents to making a planner. Web 2.0 has brought forth a passel of applications that will revolutionize the world. Netbooks are dramatically cheaper than traditional laptops, and they will bring informational freedom to many across the world. The internet is the great leveler.

Another power the web has exists in some of those applications: the ability to connect in a way never before possible. My website is a perfect example of this. How easy was it to put up that website? At the same time, how well could that serve me? There are so many things I can do to connect to people who can help me it is ridiculous. Knowing how to market yourself and make the internet work for me is a very valuable thing. Anyone can use Facebook and LinkedIn, but not everyone has a social media resume with a personal branding statement. That is important, because if you can use the web to set yourself apart, then you are one step ahead.

Yet another invaluable thing that I learned was how important it is to be able to interact with technology. Like I said above, most things are moving towards the internet. If you do not know how to operate with it and within it, you might be in trouble. There is always a generational gap in terms of technology, and as a result, older people do not take advantage of the technology’s many uses. This will not happen to me because I learned how to adapt myself to new innovations and use them.

NOTICE

I deleted my google site, and am working on rossjsabasteanski.com.

It should be up and running soon!

Are we safe?

With North Korea gearing up to launch a rocket into space, America and governments around the world are preparing to respond. Or, at least they should be. According to a NYT article, the Obama’s administration has decided not to try and stop the launch. While this may seem okay, consider that Secretary Gates said, “I don’t know anyone at a senior level in the American government who does not believe this technology is intended as a mask for the development of an intercontinental ballistic missile.” That, along with North Korea’s nuclear program, should put fear into Americans.

Instead, the President chose to focus his efforts on Pakistan and Afghanistan. While this is noble and generally seen as an okay thing to do, this is not the time. North Korea is not considered a stable country, as it is under a communist regime, and steps should be taken to stop inroads that cannot be reversed. If they do launch this rocket, then it spells danger for democratic people across the world. What is probably not going to happen will be a direct launch from North Korea to, say, Japan. No one is a winner in that situation. What worries me is that they could give the technology to groups that intend to do harm, such as Al Qaeda.

This is a serious test for the President. It does not only have an implication in terms of his negotiation skills, but it also concerns the validity of his “diplomacy first” international relations scheme and overall judgment. He appears to be ignoring the advice of his Defense Secretary, which could cost the lives of innocents. This could signal his disregard of the opinions of those with another opinion.

It is also worth considering that the only legitimate threat from another foreign government is from an atomic warhead or other missile. Why should we not protect ourselves anyway? There are always things that are unpredicatable, and this would be a good investment. After all, we spend as much as the rest of the world combined on defense. Who is going to invade us? This would also fit in with President Obama’s non-interventionist policy.

There is, however, undoubtedly more behind the decision that what I have described here. Regardless of any ignorance the public is afflicted with, the resolution of this international situation will forebode partially our nation’s fate for the next four years.

Assignment 5

I just completed a project with four other people (Jean-Paul, Joaquin, Michelle, and Gerardo) in which we took a long look at a Web 2.0 company. The presentaion was done in class, and posted to YouTube. Check it out!

I demoed the Web 2.0 site StumbleUpon and found it cool. The first thing I came accross is this video that actually relates to IT class. I think it is awesome that there is so much information that the web can direct you to. It can open up my eyes to new things and information that I did not know about or never would have found otherwise. The only downside is that it allows people to enter "information cocoons" where they only see items relevant to their interests. This, I think, is a problem because then they are not exposed to anything that they might not agree with. This limits their perspectives and provides them with only a one-sided picture. But, all-in-all, this website it a cool and effective tool.

My Spybot Spyware Scan

This is the screen shot of the results from a scan that I ran on 03 February 2009. These results surprise me becaue I have not ran a scan in a while (I normally use AdAware) and I exprected there to be more spyware programs. What also surprises me is that many of these programs seem to be associated with the browser Chrome. This may be because the Spybot was written before Chrome was released, or at least widely in use. It probably recognizes this as a harmful program even though it is completely benign just because of its structure. Another response to this scan was the relative short time that it took: no more than ten minutes. This seems short to completely scan and entire system, so I have to believe that it scans only specific areas.

Check out that link to my Jing video about how to edit the quick command access bar in Word!!!

This crossloop is a great feature where I can show a person (Gerardo in this case) how to do something on his own screen. Because I am actually showing him (and a picture is worth a thousand words) I do not have to type much. I actually change the access bar on his program, and he sees me do this. This can be done with anything on your computer, not just Word.

This can be very helpful in a business because you can troubleshoot with an IT professional without having to go see them in person. This would be really nice for small things. It can allow a workdforce to become more mobile and allow two people to work on the same project in completely different places at once. I
